Conclusion

This chapter has discussed the main ethical issues and dilemmas facing criminal law practitioners. The choices and behaviour of lawyers and judges have significant and long-term effects on the lives of many people. While we should expect all legal professionals to act competently and without bias, adherence to a code does not mean they will escape difficult dilemmas. Codes of conduct for lawyers provide important guidance and official expectations about how to act and how to resolve dilemmas. The following chapter looks in depth at types of unethical practices indulged in by judges and lawyers, and some key consequences of those actions.
